Joel Roberts Poinsett was a notable figure in South Carolina history. One of the lesser known places that bears his name is Poinsett Bridge in northern Greenville County. This bridge was built in 1820 as part of a road from Columbia to Saluda Mountain. This stone bridge is believed by historians to have been designed by Robert Mills, the architect of the Washington Monument. It is also believed to be the oldest surviving bridge in the state! The bridge has a 14 foot Gothic stone arch and stretches 130 feet over Little Gap Creek.
