Attracting Cardinals To Your Yard

Many homeowners enjoy attracting hummingbirds to their yard but have you thought about trying to entice some Cardinals?  These beautiful, red birds are commonly found in the southern United States.  But did you know that there are ways to make your outdoor space even more attractive to them?  Here are some tips on how to do just that!

The first step in attracting cardinals to your yard is getting the right type of feeder.  Cardinals prefer feeders that allow them to sit, perch, and feed comfortably.  Sturdy, well-made feeders tend to be best because they can withstand strong winds and other inclement weather.

Once you have a suitable feeder, it’s time to fill it up with food!  Cardinals enjoy a variety of nuts, seeds, and even some fruit.  Sunflower seeds are a popular option as they provide cardinals with plenty of protein.  You can also offer mealworms – these little critters will entice cardinals and other birds alike.  And don’t forget about adding some raisins or apples; these fruits provide an added source of nutrition for the birds during colder months when food sources may be scarce.

In addition to providing the right food, you can make your outdoor space even more inviting for cardinals by including plenty of foliage for them to hide in.  This could include trees such as pines or spruces as well as shrubs like holly or laurel.  These plants provide shelter from predators as well as natural beauty for your backyard!  Additionally, offering water sources such as bird baths or shallow dishes filled with water will further encourage cardinals to spend time in your outdoor space.

For cardinals, reflective surfaces can trigger a feeling of threat from an intruding bird.  To ensure cardinals feel comfortable visiting your yard, it is best to reduce as many reflective pieces as possible.  Of course, there’s no need to cover every glass window in sight, but it might be best to reconsider any glass-top tables or other mirrored decorations you might have on the patio or in your garden.  For avid bird watchers or serious gardeners, reducing reflection is a great way to attract cardinals and make sure that all the beautiful birds find a safe place to soar.

So if you’re looking for ways to bring more color and life into your backyard this season, why not try attracting some Northern Cardinals?  With proper planning and care, you’ll soon be able to observe these stunning birds flitting around your yard!  Whether it’s providing the right type of feeder or ensuring there is enough foliage nearby – following these simple tips will help you create the perfect environment for cardinals (and other feathered friends!) in no time at all!
