It is that wonderful time of year once again for the Annual Oconee Bell Fest! The celebration of the very rare Oconee Bell wildflower will be held at Devils Fork State Park on Saturday, March 16th from 10am to 3pm.
This delicate bell-shaped flower is only found in the most isolated places in the southern Appalachians. One of these infrequent locations happens to be the state park where the Bell Fest is held. Only two to three weeks from mid-March to early April can you see the blossoms at Devils Fork. The low-growing plant produces a white and yellow blossom with a red stem and red-tinged leaves that are serrated. This wildflower thrives in the wild among moist wooded areas that are alongside streams. On the nature trail of this state park you can view clumps of this plant along the winding creek. During the Bell Fest, master naturalists of the Upstate will give guided tours through the Oconee Bell Nature Trail, which is a pleasant one-mile loop and will be offered every 30 minutes.
