The Hagood Mill Historic Site will be hosting the Americana Folk Festival on Saturday, June 18th! No matter if it is a sunshiny day or if the rain clouds are out, this event will go on from 10am to 4pm.
The Americana Folk Festival is a celebration of American folk music, which is essentially music from our roots – roots of the Appalachians, which blended Irish, Scottish, and African traditional music. In addition to this special festival highlighting the great Americana Folk music, there will also be the traditional 3rd Saturday happenings at the mill site, such as live history demonstrations, which includes blacksmithing, quilting, and even some moonshinin’!
Adults and teens have an admission fee of $5 but children 12 and under are free and no fee to park so get your group ready to not only learn a little something but to have fun and enjoy some wonderful music!
The Hagood Mill has been an epicenter for the local area since the late 1800s, when it originally was used to grind flour and various meals (corn, wheat). In fact, it’s one of the oldest gristmills in the Southern US that is still operating to this day. When you visit the Mill, you can not only learn about how settlers lived off our Upstate land, but also how Hagood Mill operates, and even pick up a bag of freshly ground meal or flour! Hagood Mill is a perfect spot to spend the day with children, educating them on the way their ancestors grew up. Visit the historic cabins to see how a simpler life was led, learn from the on-staff blacksmith as he pounds new blades, or visit the mercantile shop to pick up locally made artisan goods.
Hagood Mill is located in Pickens, SC off Highway 178 between Pickens town & Sunset, SC. For those living at Reserve at Lake Keowee or Cliffs at Keowee Springs, the mill is only a 20 minute drive. Plan a day for a quick trip to Hagood and enjoy a day learning and living Appalachian style.
