Fontana Dam – Perfect Day Trip!

Looking for a fun day trip? Within a couple of hours from The Cliffs Communities or The Reserve at Lake Keowee you can be at the tallest dam east of the Rockies. What structure is this? The Fontana Dam of North Carolina!
In 1942, construction began on the Fontana Dam and due to the dire need of electric power during the second World War, this dam was completed in a mere 36 months. Located on the Little Tennessee River, the wall stands at 480 feet – same as a 50-story building!
Fontana Dam and Fontana Lake continue to be a wonderful asset for North Carolina. One obvious benefit is the electricity produced when water is released through the dam. But let’s not forget about the wonderful recreational opportunities made available. The Appalachian Trail crosses the very top of the dam – talk about a view! Fontana Lake gives tourists and locals a chance to go boating, swimming, and fishing. Interested in hiking or camping? Then consider making this day trip and overnight stay! Did we mention hot showers are available to campers curtesy of the dam itself? And with the Great Smoky Mountains as the surrounding backdrop, you will not be at a loss for beautiful places to explore.
The visitors center is open May thru November and gives much more information and attractions of the area. For more information, click here.
